Vegetable prices surge, onion prices hit Rs 45 per kg

Hyderabad, June 12 (INN): The prices of vegetables in the market are on the rise, causing difficulties for the common man. The price of onions, stable until recently, has also surged. In the retail market, onions are now selling for Rs. 40 to Rs. 45 per kg. Traders attribute the price hike to reduced imports from the Maharashtra market.

Malakpet in Telangana and Tadepalligudem in Andhra Pradesh are renowned for their onion markets. These markets typically receive at least 450 tonnes of onions daily from Sholapur, Nasik, Pune, and Ahmednagar. However, only 240 tonnes are currently arriving daily, affecting prices. A week ago, onions were priced at Rs. 20 to Rs. 30 per kg in the retail market but have now increased to Rs. 50 to Rs. 60 per kg. Similarly, Nashik onions, which were sold at Rs. 100 per three kg, are now priced at Rs. 40 to Rs. 45 per kg for lower quality.

The upcoming Bakrid Festival is expected to further increase demand, exacerbating the situation. Market traders pointed out that the imbalance between demand and supply is driving the price surge. (INN)
