Hyderabad, Aug.4 (NSS): Telangana Director General of Police has said upholding basic principles of justice for supporting the victims, especially women and children, crime has been accorded highest priority by Telangana State Police.
In a pressnote here today, DGP Jitender, IPS, stated that a systematic and structured system of supervision and monitoring of investigation and prosecution is being followed in respect to serious offences. This has yielded rich dividends in terms of convictions received in such crimes, he added. In 2024, Telangana Police has achieved good convictions, including a recent Capital punishment awarded by the MSJ Court, Ranga Reddy in a case involving rape and murder of a young girl in Narsingi Police Station (Cr No. 818/2017 U/s Section 363, 366,376(A),302 IPC, Sec 5 r/w 6 Protection of children from sexual offences Act-2012.
The DGP said in 2024, Telangana saw significant convictions in rape and POCSO cases with 15 convictions for 20 years, two convictions for 25 years, and 11 convictions for life imprisonment, totalling 28 convictions. The highest number of significant convictions was recorded in Hyderabad and Rachakonda, each with five convictions, he said, adding this was possible because of the keen focus on the investigation milestones set for investigating officers and supervisory officers to ensure continuity of quality till conviction is ensured. Also support to the victim through the Bharosa centres has helped in empowering the victims. Not only do the Bharosa Centres ensure that the victim is given a supportive environment, the Bharosa team also follows up and supports the victim during trial of the cases.
Some of the noteworthy convictions secured in the past few months are: In Hyderabad, a father of eight children was awarded Life imprisonment for repeatedly raping his own daughter. In a case of forcible unnatural sexual offence committed against a young boy in Adilabad, the accused was awarded rigorous imprisonment of 20 years and fine of Rs 10,000. A rag picker’s daughter raped by father was awarded 25 years rigorous imprisonment.
In most cases of crime against women and children, the crime (almost 95%) was committed by known persons. This often results in victim/family members turning hostile during trial. Continuous support by Bharosa and local Police has ensured that in the above cases the prosecution case was well supported with evidence.
DGP Jitender, IPS, in a recent meeting held with all Staff Officers and Unit Officers reiterated that primary focus of all officers must be on quality of investigation to secure convictions. It was reiterated by the DGP that there shall be Zero tolerance for crime against women & children. He appreciated the role of Bharosa Centres, investigating officers, court duty officers and prosecutors in obtaining these important convictions which would act as deterrent against such crimes.
