Hyderabad, Dec.4 (NSS): Mild tremors were felt at several places in the two Telugu States today. The tremors were felt for a few seconds at 7.27 am on Wednesday morning. This created panic among the people. They ran out of their homes and apartments. The epicentre of the earthquake was at Medaram in Telangana’s Mulugu district. The intensity of the quake was recorded as 5.3 on the Richter scale. The scientists at CSIR-NCRI in Hyderabad have revealed this. They said the tremors were felt within a radius of 225 km from the epicentre of the earthquake.
The places where the tremors were felt are: Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Jaggayyapeta, Nandigama and Eluru. In Telangana, the tremors were felt in several parts of Hyderabad city as well as in the combined Khammam, Ranga Reddy, Warangal, Karimnagar and Jangaon districts. The tremors were felt in Vanasthalipuram, Hayatnagar and Abdullapurmet areas of Hyderabad city limits. They were also felt in Mulugu, Hanumakonda and Bhupalpally in the combined Warangal district as well as Kothagudem, Manugur, Bhadrachalam, Charla, Chintakani, Nagulavancha, Yellandu and Godavari catchment areas of the combined Khammam district. The wall of a house collapsed at Shankarajupalle in Eturu Nagaram mandal.
According to locals, the tremors lasted for about three seconds in the combined Khammam district. However, NGRI principal scientist explained as to why the quake struck Hyderabad and several other parts of the two Telugu-speaking States. He said the tremors were felt in the Godavari basin and added that the epicentre of the quake had been identified in the Mulugu region. “The quake struck at 7.27 am on Wednesday. Its impact was mostly seen in Mulugu, Bhadrachalam and Kothagudem districts.
In the catchment areas of Godavari, it was naturally recorded as 5.3 points on the Richter scale. Naturally, when it comes to the catchment areas of the river, the impact will be around 300 km away. That is why the impact of the tremors has been found in many places in Hyderabad. It started in the Mulugu area of Godavari and there was a slight earthquake in the Krishna river. There is also a possibility of earthquakes again. However, the tremors will be of lesser intensity than at present. In 1969, Bhadrachalam received the highest earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale. “There are no accidents under 6 on the Richter scale and we don’t have this risk,” he said. People should not panic,” he said and added that it was better not to stay in cracked buildings and old buildings.
