TELANGANA PRISONS DEPT RECORDS REMARKABLE SALES GROWTH AT NUMAISH – 2026

Hyderabad, Jan.19 (RAHNUMA): Dr. Soumya Mishra, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Telangana, visited the Telangana Prisons department stall at “NUMAISH – 2026 (All India Industrial Exhibition)” at Nampally here on January 18. During her visit, the DG Prisons reviewed the sales performance, product range and public response, and interacted with the officers and staff managing the stall.

Soumya Mishra appreciated the quality, affordability, and social relevance of the prison-made products and commended the innovative initiatives introduced this year. She also issued instructions and suggestions to further improve sales performance and enhance facilities for visitors.

Subsequently, the DG Prisons held a meeting with the exhibition organisation members – R. Sukesh Reddy (Vice President), B. N. Rajesh (Secretary), T. Chandrashekar (Joint Secretary), N. Sanjeev Kumar (Treasurer) and D. Sandhya (Club Convener) — and discussed measures to strengthen coordination and visitor engagement.

During the first 18 days of NUMAISH – 2026 (January 1 to 18, 2026), the Telangana Prisons Department achieved total sales of Rs.25.43 lakh, reflecting steady day-wise growth and strong public participation.

Notably, the sales achieved within last 18 days have already surpassed the total sales of the previous two years (Rs.23.64 lakh in 2025 and Rs.20.96 lakh in 2024), indicating a strong upward trend and growing public trust in prison-manufactured products which included weaving, home care, durries, carpentry, honey, agriculture, steel and other products. Weaving and handloom products emerged as the major contributors, while durries, carpentry items, honey, and agricultural products together reflected the diversification and strengthening of prison industries.

The introduction of Prison Honey at NUMAISH – 2026 received an encouraging response, contributing 7% of total turnover during the first 18 days. This highlights increasing consumer preference for natural, hygienic, and prison-produced agri-based products, while promoting sustainable livelihoods for prisoners. Another noteworthy initiative was the use of eco-friendly paper bags, made by prisoners using recycled old newspapers, reinforcing the Department’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The encouraging performance at NUMAISH–2026 reaffirms the Telangana Prisons department’s commitment to transforming prisons into centres of correction, reformation, and rehabilitation, while providing prisoners with meaningful skills, employment opportunities, and dignity.

The visit was attended by N. Murali Babu, Inspector General of Prisons; N. Shivakumar Goud, Superintendent, Central Prison, Hyderabad; S. M. Khalid Akther, Assistant Director of Industries, along with other senior officers and staff.

The authorities appealed to the people to visit Telangana Prisons Department stall at NUMAISH–2026, and purchase prison-made products and support skill development, dignity, and prisoners’ welfare.
