GHMC opens new horizons for children of sanitation workers

Hyderabad, Jan.30 (RAHNUMA): In a landmark initiative, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is opening the doors of one of India’s premier institutions IIT Hyderabad to the children of the city’s sanitation workers.

For the first time, these young students will embark on a specially curated exposure visit to the IIT Hyderabad campus on January 31, thanks to the vision and special initiative of Commissioner RV Karnan.

This programme goes beyond a simple campus tour. It is designed to ignite ambition, broaden horizons, and inspire children from classes 6 to 10 across GHMC circles — children whose families quietly serve the city every day by keeping its streets clean.

Commissioner RV Karnan has directed officials to ensure the success of this initiative, which will include interactive sessions with IIT faculty and students, visits to academic buildings, libraries, and innovation centres, as well as motivational programmes tailored to spark curiosity and confidence. For many participants, this will be their first-ever experience of a world-class institution — transforming imagination into inspiration.

For families who rise before dawn to clean Hyderabad’s streets, this visit carries a powerful message: their children’s dreams matter, and excellence is within their reach.

This initiative reflects GHMC’s belief that every child deserves equal access to dreams, dignity, and opportunity- regardless of background. Our sanitation workers keep Hyderabad clean; today, we take a small step to help their children aim higher and dream bigger,” said GHMC officials.

The programme is being organised in collaboration with the E-Cell at IIT Hyderabad, with special arrangements for transportation, food, safety, and mentoring support — ensuring that every child feels welcomed, valued, and encouraged.

This effort is a reminder that true cleanliness is not only about spotless streets, but also about removing barriers to education, hope, and social mobility. Through this heartfelt initiative, GHMC is building not just a cleaner city, but brighter futures — one child at a time.

“Our sanitation workers are the backbone of Hyderabad. Through this initiative, we want to tell their children that their future is just as important as anyone else’s. This exposure visit is a small but meaningful step to help them believe in themselves and dream without limits,” RV Karnan said.
