Hyderabad, Feb.16 (RAHNUMA): The ruling Congress party has secured the mayoral position in Nizamabad with the assistance of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).
Umarani was appointed as Mayor, while Salma Tahseen assumed the role of Deputy Mayor. The elections for these positions occurred following the swearing-in of the corporators.
In the recent municipal elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) obtained 28 seats within the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation. The Congress party garnered 17 seats, AIMIM acquired 14 seats, and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) obtained 1 seat. To secure the mayoral position, a total of 31 votes was necessary. The BJP, however, remains three seats short of this threshold.
In response to this scenario, senior leaders of the ruling Congress party mobilised and adopted strategic measures. They allied with AIMIM and also incorporated a BRS candidate who joined the Congress. Consequently, the mayoral position in Nizamabad was claimed by the Congress Party, leading to the selection of Umarani as the city’s mayor.
Subsequently, Dharmapuri Arvind, a local Member of Parliament and senior BJP leader, commented on the Congress party’s success in obtaining the mayoral and deputy mayoral positions by a narrow margin of three votes. He expressed dissatisfaction regarding the coalition formed by the BRS, Congress, and AIMIM aimed at countering the BJP.
“Today, I understood why the BRS President K. Chandrashekhar Rao and working president KT Rama Rao are being protected by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in the Kaleshwaram, Formula-E car race and other corruption cases,” Arvind said.
He accused the opposition parties of collaborating unethically to outmaneuver the BJP within the Nizamabad corporation and suggested that police, perceived to be aligned with the Congress, contributed to the BJP’s defeat. He pledged to rectify this outcome prior to the conclusion of the current five-year term, while asserting that the BJP achieved a moral victory in this municipal election.
Arvind affirmed the BJP’s commitment to regaining control of the corporation within the term’s duration.
