BC census row: Telangana BC commission urges centre to add 40 BC castes before enumeration

Hyderabad, March 4 (RAHNUMA): The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes has raised serious concerns over the upcoming Central Census, warning that the Backward Class (BC) population figures in the state may be underreported if corrective steps are not taken.

As per the Census schedule, House Listing in Telangana will be conducted from May 11 to June 9, 2026, followed by Population Enumeration from February 9 to 28, 2027.

The state BC Commission pointed out that while Telangana recognizes 130 castes as Backward Classes, the Central Government’s OBC list includes only 90 BC castes from the state, leaving out 40 castes. This discrepancy, it said, could result in an inaccurate reflection of the BC population in the official records.

The State Government and the BC Commission had earlier requested the Centre to include the remaining 40 castes in the Central OBC list, but no decision has been taken so far.

The Commission has now urged that the Census process in Telangana should commence only after the inclusion of these 40 castes in the Central OBC list. In this regard, BC commission Chairman G Niranjan has written to Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao seeking necessary action to ensure their inclusion before enumeration begins.
