Focus on English proficiency without neglecting mother tongue: Governor

Hyderabad, June 19 (RAHNUMA): Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has urged teachers to promote English language proficiency among students while ensuring the preservation of their mother tongues and cultural heritage.

Interacting with participants of the two-week English Language Proficiency Programme organised for teachers working in Tribal Welfare Educational Institutions, the Governor presented certificates to those who successfully completed the training programme at Lok Bhavan on Friday.

The programme, organised by the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, was aimed at enhancing the English language teaching skills of teachers serving in Tribal Welfare Residential Educational Institutions across the State.

As part of its support for teacher capacity-building initiatives in the tribal welfare sector, the Lok Bhavan sanctioned ₹12.80 lakh from the Governor’s Discretionary Fund for the programme. A total of 50 teachers and five faculty members from EFLU participated in the training.

Addressing the participants, the Governor appreciated the efforts of EFLU and the Tribal Welfare department in strengthening the communication and teaching abilities of educators working in remote tribal areas.

He observed that improved English proficiency among teachers would help enhance students’ confidence and communication skills, while also expanding their access to higher education and employment opportunities.

The Governor noted that teachers play a crucial role in shaping the future of students and said that such capacity-building programmes would help bridge educational gaps and contribute to the holistic development of children in tribal regions. Referring to the financial assistance extended through Lok Bhavan, he reiterated the Raj Bhavan’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at the welfare and advancement of tribal communities.

The Governor emphasised that while students should be equipped with the skills necessary to compete in an increasingly globalised world, equal importance must be given to preserving their mother tongues and the rich cultural heritage of tribal communities.

Congratulating the participants on successfully completing the programme, he urged them to effectively utilise the knowledge and skills acquired during the training for the benefit of their students.

Special Chief Secretary to Governor M. Dana Kishore, EFLU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nagaraju, Joint Secretary to Governor K. Shashikirana Chary and Associate Professor Dr. Raja Ram were present.
