Syria to launch direct Damascus-Amsterdam flights in July

LONDON(RAHNUMA): Syrian Airlines will operate its first flight from Damascus to Amsterdam in the first week of July, the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport has confirmed.

Flights between European cities — except Moscow — and the Syrian Arab Republic were suspended during the 13 years of civil war, which ended in 2024.

The authority announced that the move reflected the country’s gradual return to regional and international air transport networks, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

Dan Air became the first airline from the EU to operate a commercial flight from Bucharest, Romania’s capital, to Syria last June.

Aviation authorities are currently in discussion with German officials as the parties consider lifting the ban on flights between the two countries. A decision is anticipated next month, the SANA reported.

Flights from Russia to Syria were suspended from 2012 to 2018. After that, Moscow became the only European destination to which Syrians could fly directly from Damascus, as Russia was a supporter of former President Bashar Assad, who was later granted asylum in Moscow.
