Hyderabad, Aug.12 (RAHNUMA): In a significant step towards rehabilitation and social reintegration, 78 inmates of Telangana prisons have successfully passed the SSC examination through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) for the first time.
The Telangana Prisons Department had entered into an MoU with NIOS to enable inmates to pursue secondary education. A total of 108 inmates from Central Prison, Cherlapalli, Central Prison, Nizamabad and the Special Prison for Women, Hyderabad, enrolled for the Class X programme.
Of the successful candidates, 56 are from Cherlapalli, 15 from Nizamabad and seven from Special prison for women, Hyderabad. The inmates underwent a year of structured preparation, including regular classes, mock tests and pre-board examinations, with support from government and private teachers.
Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Soumya Mishra distributed certificates to the successful candidates and praised their determination and commitment to education. She announced Director General’s Remission to all inmates who passed the SSC examination through NIOS as a special incentive and encouragement for inmates pursuing education and self-improvement.
The department will encourage the successful candidates to pursue Senior Secondary (10+2) through NIOS. After completing 10+2, they can pursue undergraduate courses through the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University Study Centre at Cherlapalli Central Prison.
The successful inmates are also eligible to pursue ITI courses at the prison’s ITI centre, providing them with opportunities to acquire technical skills and improve their employability. The initiative reflects the Telangana Prisons department’s focus on education, skill development, rehabilitation and helping inmates build dignified lives after release.

Srinivas, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Hyderabad Range; M. Sampath Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Warangal Range and G. Pramod, Superintendent, Central Prison, Cherlapalli, D. Bharath, Superintendent, Prisoner’s Agricultural Colony, Lakshmi Srinath, Superintendent SPW Hyderabad, P Ashok Kumar, Superintendent CP Nizamabad along with other senior prison officials, NIOS representatives, teachers, staff members and inmates.
