Hyderabad, Aug.12 (RAHNUMA): Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Wednesday described the Urban Farming & Kitchen Gardening Expo 2026 as a “need of the hour”, calling for greater awareness and participation in growing food at home.
The expo, organised by the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) in association with Rythu Nestham Foundation at Federation House, brought together urban households, farmers, entrepreneurs, startups and technology providers. The Expo was inaugurated by the Minister in the presence of Padma Shri Awardee Dr. Yadlapalli Venkateswara Rao, Chairman, Rythu Nestham Foundation.
Inaugurating the expo, the Minister recalled a time when most rural households grew at least some vegetables themselves. He expressed concern that the traditional practice had declined to such an extent that vegetables were now increasingly transported from cities to villages.
He also highlighted growing concerns over food safety, chemical use and pesticide residues, saying kitchen gardening could help people understand how and where their food is produced.
FTCCI President K.K. Maheshwari said rapid urbanisation was turning cities into “concrete jungles” and stressed the need to bring agriculture closer to homes, institutions and communities.
The expo showcased solutions in terrace and balcony gardening, hydroponics, vertical farming, organic inputs, bio-pesticides, composting and waste management. Visitors also had access to expert consultations and practical guidance.
The organisers said urban farming could promote healthier lifestyles, environmental responsibility and a stronger connection between citizens and food production.
