Hyderabad, Feb.16 (RAHNUMA): In a dramatic conclusion, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured the position of Mayor of the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, amassing a total of 34 votes. Kolagani Srinivas, a corporator from the second division of the BJP, was elected as Mayor, while Y. Sunil Rao from the 42nd division was appointed as Deputy Mayor.
Out of the 66 divisions, the BJP achieved victory in 30. Additionally, one corporator from the AIFB and two independents expressed their support for the BJP’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor candidates, contributing to the total of 34 votes, which included the ex-officio vote from Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar. Notably, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) abstained from the voting process.
Despite the BJP nearing a majority to secure control over the KMC, the situation remained uncertain as the Congress party had manipulated circumstances to pursue the Mayor position with the backing of the BRS, MIM, AIFB, and several independents. However, this dynamic shifted overnight when the BRS opted to refrain from participating in the voting. While Congress, the AIFB, and independents engaged in the voting process, the BRS maintained its withdrawal.
