Brutal Suppression of Dissent’: MLC Sravan seeks Governor’s Intervention over OU Prof Suspension

Hyderabad, Jan.22 (RAHNUMA): BRS MLC Sravan Kumar Dasoju has sought the urgent intervention of the Telangana Governor over the suspension of Prof. B. Manohar by Osmania University, calling it a ‘brutal suppression of freedom of expression’.

In a representation to the Governor, Sravan described the January 12, 2026 suspension as a ‘colorable exercise of power’ aimed at silencing academic dissent and creating a climate of fear within the University. Universities are not extensions of the executive or police hierarchies but the ‘social conscience of the State’. Suspending a senior professor for raising questions amounts to treating dissent as a crime, he remarked.

Recalling Osmania University’s legacy of resistance and democratic struggle, Sravan warned that the institution is being pushed towards ‘surveillance and coerced compliance’. He alleges violations of Articles 14, 19(1)(a), and 21 of the Constitution and faults the administration for suspending Prof. Manohar without a regular departmental enquiry. Silencing professors would strip universities of their democratic character and reduce scholars to ‘robotic followers of official diktat’, he noted.

The BRS MLC urged the Governor to revoke the suspension, call for all records, and issue strict directions to protect academic autonomy in State universities.
