Camel a winner in the fashion stakes, study shows

RIYADH, 31 August: The cultural and economic value of camel products in contemporary fashion has been highlighted by the Saudi Fashion Commission as part of the “Fashion Future” initiative, which coincides with the International Year of the Camelids 2024.

In a research paper titled “Camel … Contemporary Fashion,” the commission underlined the role of camel products in fashion, the use of camel leather and hair in the industry, and the future of the sector globally.

According to the research paper, the Arabian camel makes up 94 percent of the global camel population of 42 million. Saudi Arabia has the fifth-largest camel population globally, estimated at 2 million.

Camel leather could contribute revenue of up to $98.7 million per annum for the Saudi economy, and based on the existing Saudi camel population, 2,800 tons of camel hair could be produced annually, valued at $2 million.
