Centre agreed to supply energy to Telangana: Kishan

New Delhi, Aug.27 (NSS): With the initiative of the Union Ministry of Coal, the ongoing effort to meet the future power needs of Telangana has been taken forward. Due to this, 200 MW of solar energy (solar power) will be supplied to Telangana annually. NLC (Navyly Lignite Corporation) India Limited has agreed to supply energy to Telangana .

As part of the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) scheme launched by the Central government, The Neveli Lignite Corporation India Limited is setting up a 510 MW power plant in Bibar area of Gujarat’s Kutch district. Kutch has enough land and a favourable environment for solar power. The solar power plant, which is being built at a cost of Rs 1,214 crore, is almost complete. There is ample possibility that power generation through the project will start from June 2025. This solar power project will be a key component in meeting telangana’s power needs.

The solar project will provide electricity at an estimated cost of Rs 2.57/kWh. This will save telangana transco about Rs 2,000 crore in the next 25 years. Through this project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s green power generation goals will go a step further. The solar panels and related equipment will be purchased from the Telangana market. This will pave the way for the production of solar panels in Telangana. This will also increase direct and indirect employment opportunities. This will also generate revenue in the form of SGST for the Telangana State Government. Moreover, this solar project will further enhance the participation of Telangana state in green energy.  The solar project could intercept 8.9 million tonnes of carbon emissions through 12.5 billion units of green energy supplied over a lifetime. Another important feature of the solar project is that all the solar cells used in the project will be used indigenously to give a fillip to the ‘Make in India’ goal.

Union Minister Kishan Reddy suggested that the state government should take a step in this direction and sign a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the NLC at the earliest. Earlier also, the central government had decided to increase the power generation in Telangana and meet the domestic and industrial needs of the state. Since the formation of the new State, as part of this, about Rs 11,000 crore will be spent by NTPC. It is well known that two power plants with a capacity of 800 MW (a total capacity of 1,600 MW) have been set up at Ramagundam, which were inaugurated by the Prime Minister himself.

Apart from this, the 100 MW floating solar power plant set up by NTPC at Ramagundam was also dedicated to the nation on July 31, 2022 by the Prime Minister. Apart from this, the Center is also providing assistance to other power projects being constructed in the state. The Center is ready to set up another 2,400 MW capacity power plants under NTPC. But if the state comes forward and enters into a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) in the matter of purchasing the power generated here, it will pave the way for NTPC to start operations.
