Hyderabad, Oct.1 (NSS): Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy has strongly criticised the opposition for spreading false information regarding the beautification and cleansing efforts of the Musi River.
Addressing the media at Gandhi Bhavan here on Tuesday, he expressed disappointment over the false propaganda being circulated, especially on social media, which he claimed was stirring unnecessary fear and confusion among the people.
Reminding the statement of former chief minister K ChandrashekarRao who once said during an Assembly session tha there are 28,000 illegal structures along the Musi river that must be demolished, the Congress MP urged the people to cooperate with the government’s initiative.
“Every monsoon, Hyderabad residents face severe issues and these illegal constructions have exacerbated the city’s flooding problems,” he pointed out.
Kiran Kumar Reddy pointed out that the Musi River provides direct irrigation to 30,000 acres and indirectly benefits 60,000 acres of agricultural land. It has the capacity to store 5.5 TMC of water and irrigates lands through both its right and left canals, with 14,770 acres under the right canal and 15,230 acres under the left. Additionally, borewells, lakes, and ponds along the river contribute to the irrigation of nearly 60,000 acres, he explained.
However, the once-flourishing lands around the Musi, known for their greenery and clean air, are now heavily polluted. Experts and environmentalists warn that this pollution poses a significant risk to public health, with scientists identifying harmful chemicals in the river that could affect memory and cognitive abilities, the Congress MP pointed out.
Stating that the Congress government is committed to cleaning the Musi on a war footing, he warned that failing to do so would be an injustice to future generations.
The Congress MP dismissed opposition claims, saying that their disinformation campaigns were driven by political envy, particularly aimed at tarnishing the reputation of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s government.
“The government has pledged to provide double-bedroom homes for Musi evacuees, offer loans to women’s self-help groups, and ensure that students’ education is not disrupted during these efforts,” he disclosed.
The Congress MP further emphasised the collective responsibility to preserve natural resources and called on the opposition to support the government’s initiatives for the greater good of the people.
