Countdown to March 31: CS Krishna Rao retiring this March

Hyderabad, Feb.9 (RAHNUMA): Telangana Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, a 1991-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Telangana cadre, is set to retire on March 31, following the completion of a seven-month extension granted by the Centre.

His superannuation will bring to a close a tenure that has coincided with several key phases of the state’s administrative and developmental journey.

Ramakrishna Rao assumed charge as Chief Secretary on 30 April, 2025, bringing with him long-standing experience in public finance and governance. Widely regarded as a specialist in fiscal management, he earlier served as Special Chief Secretary for Finance and is credited with steering the preparation of 14 state Budgets, including two vote-on-account budgets an achievement that has earned him a reputation as a steady and technically sound administrator.

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi, Rao also holds an MBA in Investments, reflecting his strong grounding in both engineering and financial management. Over the course of his career, he has held several senior positions, including Director General of the Centre for Good Governance (CGG) and Collector and District Magistrate in Adilabad and Guntur.

Known for his data-driven and technology-enabled approach to governance, Rao has played a central role in shaping financial reforms and institutional processes in the state. His extended tenure, approved in late 2025, was aimed at ensuring continuity at the top of the administration during a crucial period for Telangana.

With his retirement scheduled for March 2026, Krishna Rao will conclude more than three decades of service marked by fiscal stewardship, administrative stability, and reform-oriented leadership.
