(RAHNUMA) Founded nearly 600 years ago on the banks of Wadi Hanifah, Diriyah occupies a central place in the history of the Arabian Peninsula. In 1727, it became the capital of the powerful First Saudi State, establishing itself as a key player in the region’s political and cultural affairs. Its historical significance was internationally recognized in 2010 when At-Turaif, the heart of Diriyah, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Today, At-Turaif has been transformed into a world-class living heritage museum, inviting visitors from around the world to explore its rich history. This vibrant attraction offers galleries and exhibits that showcase the everyday life, architecture, trade, agriculture, military accomplishments, and religious affairs of the First Saudi State. Through audio-visual displays, interactive activities, and entertainment, visitors can immerse themselves in the journey of the First Saudi State—from its birth and rise to its eventual decline.
At-Turaif stands as a proud national symbol, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s storied past while embodying the goals of Vision 2030. This vision positions the site as a cornerstone in the Kingdom’s broader ambitions to preserve and celebrate its heritage. As a modern cultural capital, Diriyah is set to reacquaint Saudis with the achievements of their ancestors while fostering innovation and contemporary creativity.
In January 2023, the Diriyah Company was established through a collaboration between the Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA) and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) to further develop and execute the ambitious Diriyah project. With At-Turaif at its heart, Diriyah is poised to become a beacon of Saudi cultural identity, linking the past with the nation’s future aspirations.
