Dr Soumya Swaminathan honoured with FABA lifetime achievement award

Hyderabad, Nov.25 (NSS): Dr Soumya Swaminathan was honoured with FABA Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to Global Health at UoH.

In a prestigious ceremony held at the University of Hyderabad (UoH), Dr Soumya Swaminathan received the Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) Lifetime Achievement Award from Prof. B.J. Rao, Vice Chancellor, UoH. This accolade recognizes her outstanding contributions to medical research and public health, particularly in the fields of tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS.

Dr Swaminathan, a renowned pediatrician and clinical scientist, has been a pivotal figure in the global health community, with her career spanning several high-impact roles, including as Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO) where she was instrumental during the COVID-19 pandemic. She currently serves as the Principal Adviser for the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme at India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The award ceremony featured a series of speeches from distinguished guests, including Prof. B.J. Rao, Vice-Chancellor, UoH and Prof. Pallu Reddanna, Executive President of FABA.

Earlier, Dr Swaminathan delivered a Golden Jubilee Distinguished Lecture on “Journey of TB and COVID: Lessons for Future Challenges”. In her lecture, Dr Swaminathan explored the intersecting trajectories of tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19, two infectious diseases that have posed significant global health challenges. By drawing on her extensive experience in medical research and public health policy, Dr. Swaminathan highlighted the lessons learned from the global responses to these pandemics. The points made by the speaker will help the health professionals, policymakers, and researchers with insights to enhance preparedness and resilience in facing upcoming public health challenges.

Dr Swaminathan’s ongoing work continues to influence global health policies and practices. Her insights and leadership are pivotal as the world faces new and emerging health threats.
