Hyderabad, Nov.20 (NSS): Former Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, an alumnus of Osmania University, has come forward to confer the gold medal through ponnala foundation to the students who have excelled in the science stream of the library.
He discussed the issue with the Vice-Chancellor of the university Professor Kumar molagaram proposed his interest to confer the gold Medal . A cheque of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 50,000 was handed over as per the OU norms by him . A gold medal is awarded to a library science student every year with an interest in cash deposit. On this occasion, Prof. Kumar, thanked Ponnala Lakshmaiah. He expressed happiness over the decision taken to encourage the students as an alumnus of the university . Prof. Kumar clarified that from the convocation next year, a gold medal in library science would be awarded on behalf of the ponnala foundation.
On this occasion, several development initiatives to be taken up in the OU came up for discussion. Ponnala Lakshmaiah assured that the Ponnala Foundation would provide adequate support for the modernization of the library. On this occasion, he shared his association with the library. He recalled his childhood memories. He said that when he was studying in Class 5, he used to work as a librarian in his hometown, Khilashapur, for a salary of one rupee a month and added that he became interested in reading books through his work . He shared his thoughts on doing something back to the university where he studied.
Earlier in the day, at the end of the National Library Week organised at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Library, he Visited the book fair. The event was attended by Dr Achala Munigal, who is librarian in charge of OU Main Library.
