Hyderabad, 20th May 2024 : The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), in collaboration with the Hyderabad Traffic Police, has recently installed green mesh canopies at Liberty Road in Himayat Nagar to shield motorists from the intense summer heat. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the comfort and safety of road users during Hyderabad’s sweltering summer months.
The green mesh canopies are designed to provide shade at traffic signals, where motorists often experience prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. This initiative aims to encourage adherence to traffic rules by making it more comfortable for drivers to wait at red lights. The canopies also benefit pedestrians in the area, which is one of the city’s main shopping hubs.
Officials from the GHMC installed the mesh on a recent Saturday, with plans to extend these shade canopies to other major junctions in the city, particularly where traffic signals result in long pauses. The move addresses the discomfort many motorists face, which has led some to jump signals or stop their vehicles away from the designated lines to seek shade.
However, the timing of this initiative has been noted, as recent heavy rains have temporarily alleviated the high temperatures in Hyderabad. Despite this, the installation of the shade nets is expected to have a lasting positive impact on traffic compliance and pedestrian comfort during future hot spells .
