Gutha emphasises necessity of long-term infrastructure planning

Hyderabad, Feb.2 (RAHNUMA): Telangana Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy has emphasised the necessity of robust infrastructure for the accelerated development of the nation.

He asserted that projects must be designed to serve the public over an extended period and that public funds should be allocated in a responsible and judicious manner.

In this regard, the Institution of Engineers (India), Telangana State Centre, in partnership with Rehab Technologies, is hosting a two-day All India Seminar on “Structures Repair and Retrofitting” at Visvesvaraya Bhavan, Khairatabad, on February 2 and 3.

Gutha Sukhender Reddy attended the seminar as the chief guest and formally inaugurated the event. During his address, he expressed concern over the premature deterioration of bridges, canals, and other concrete structures that are constructed at significant costs. He characterised this issue as one of the primary challenges currently confronting the construction industry.

He remarked that, given the present circumstances, the sectors of repair and retrofitting are becoming increasingly vital.

“Upon the damage of a structure, considerable public funds are expended on repairs, which not only burdens the financial resources but also delays the initiation of new projects. Hence, it is imperative to implement proper design, quality construction, and timely repair and retrofitting measures from the outset. Repair and retrofitting should not be considered as remedial actions only taken after issues arise; rather, with timely and appropriate decision-making, the longevity of buildings, bridges, and canals can be significantly enhanced, thereby reducing accidents, improving public safety, and serving vital environmental protection goals,” he noted.

In light of these points, Gutha Sukhender Reddy called for greater collaboration among engineers, scientists, and government departments, advocating for the widespread adoption of quality construction practices, proactive maintenance, and contemporary retrofitting technologies.
