HYD DOCTORS REMOVE RARE SKULL-BASE CANCER WITHOUT OPENING THE SKULL

Hyderabad, Jan.20 (RAHNUMA): Doctors at CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, have successfully removed a rare and complex skull-base cancer using an advanced minimally invasive endoscopic technique, without opening the skull or making any external facial incision.

The patient, Bhukya Roja, a 31-year-old woman from Mahabubabad district in Telangana, has been suffering from progressive vision loss, severe headaches and hormonal imbalance. Advanced MRI and CT scans revealed an extremely rare Sinonasal Chondrosarcoma, a malignant skull-base tumour located dangerously close to the optic nerves, pituitary gland and internal carotid arteries.

Given the high-risk location of the tumour, the medical team opted for a fully endoscopic endonasal skull-base approach, enabling surgeons to access and remove the tumour through the nasal passage.

The complex surgery was performed by Dr. K. Vamshi Krishna, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and Skull-Base Surgery Specialist, using high-definition endoscopic visualisation and advanced image-guided technology. The tumour was completely removed without affecting the patient’s vision or hormonal function.

“The tumour was located just millimetres away from vital structures such as the optic nerves and pituitary gland”, Dr. Vamshi Krishna said, adding that early diagnosis and precision-driven minimally invasive surgery were key to the successful outcome.

Sinonasal chondrosarcomas account for less than 0.1 per cent of head and neck cancers and are often diagnosed late due to non-specific symptoms. The advanced endoscopic technique offers significant benefits, including no facial scars, minimal surgical trauma and faster recovery.

The patient recovered uneventfully, with follow-up examinations confirming complete tumour removal, preservation of vision and stabilised hormonal levels.

CARE Hospitals officials said the successful procedure highlights the hospital’s advanced Skull-Base and Neuro-Oncology programme and its commitment to delivering world-class, patient-centric care.
