New Delhi /Chandigarh, Feb.11 (RAHNUMA): The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has strongly condemned the blocking of ‘The Wire’s’ Instagram page and the removal of its satirical video content from multiple social media platforms, calling the move arbitrary and lacking transparency.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, IJU President K. Sreenivas Reddy and Secretary General Balwinder Singh Jammu said the actions were reportedly taken without prior notice or a formal explanation to the media organisation, raising serious concerns about press freedom and due process.
The union described the lack of clarity surrounding the alleged “legal request” behind the blocking as troubling, adding that confusion over responsibility highlights the need for accountability. According to the IJU, satire, criticism and commentary are essential components of a free press and are protected under the Constitution of India.
Calling for transparency, the IJU demanded a clear public explanation from the concerned authorities and urged the government to avoid opaque measures that could undermine democratic values. “Any attempt to silence or intimidate the media, directly or indirectly, is unacceptable in a democracy”, the statement said.
