KTR warns of opening Kaleshwaram pumps with 50,000 farmers

Hyderabad, July 26 (NSS): Demanding the State government as to why water was not being pumped from the Lakshmi (Kannepally) pump house of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project despite sufficient water availability, BRS working president KT Rama Rao said if the Congress government did not respond before August 2, the BRS would reach the pump house with 50,000 farmers and start operating the pumps.

On the second day, the BRS leaders, including MLAs and MLCs led by  KT Rama Rao visited the Lakshmi Pumphouse on Friday and and enquired from officials about the possibility of pumping water.

“Just with political vendetta, the water pumps are not being turned on only to defame their leader and former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao. The Kaleshwaram pump houses should be turned on before the Assembly session,” he demanded.

Speaking on the occasion, KTR said the Kaleshwaram project was Telangana’s lifeline and KCR built the Kaleswaram at a faster pace than any other government in the history of the country. The project was constructed so that the word ‘drought’ was not heard in Telangana and there was never a water problem under the BRS party’s regime, he pointed out.

“Kaleshwaram project will provide irrigation water to drought-hit areas. Drinking water can also be supplied to Hyderabad. Konda Pochamma Sagar was constructed with 15 TMC of water. Mallanna Sagar was constructed with 50 TMC. Water can be lifted from Lakshmi Pump House. Due to the negligence of the Congress government, drinking water is being provided once in three days. Ten lakh cusecs of water is going down in vain. The godavari is flowing vigorously near Kaleswaram. The reservoirs have become like  Deserts now,” KT Rama Rao said.

KTR further stated that If the government wants, it can provide water to 18 lakh acres, but  it is not caring even if the water is being wasted into the sea.

“The government should immediately take a decision on the pump houses. We will demand a discussion in the Assembly on behalf of the farmers. We are giving time till August 2 to the government to fill up the reservoirs within the limits of Kaleswaram. If the government does not respond, we will turn on the pumps with 50,000 farmers. We will provide water to the fallow lands of Telangana,” the BRS  leader cautioned.
