NIT Warangal student jumps to death at college hostel, depression suspected

A 22-year-old final year civil engineering student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Warangal reportedly killed himself by jumping off the sixth floor of his hostel building on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Sanketh Kumar Suryavamsi, a resident of Latur district in Maharashtra.
“Around 2 pm, Sanketh jump off from the sixth floor of the 1K hostel building. He was immediately rushed to Max Care Hospital. He suffered multiple fractures in ribs, hands and legs with severe head injuries. He was declared dead after two hours in the hospital,” Sub-Inspector Dinesh, of Kazipet circle told TNM.
Sanketh had been suffering from high fever for past three days, on Sunday morning went to the hospital for check-up.
“In the afternoon, when his friends came down for lunch, he was alone in the room. That is when the incident took place,” said the Sub-Inspector.
However, the reason of his death is still unclear.
“We did not find any suicide note, so it is still unclear whether he jumped or slipped. Though his father told us that he has been suffering from depression for past few days. The investigation is still going, after post mortem report we can further proceed,” Dinesh said.
The body has been shifted to Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital for post-mortem.
Sanketh had been doing well academically, and has been preparing for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), said Dinesh.
“He did not sit for campus placement, because he was preparing for UPSC,” he added.
According to Hindustan Times, Sanketh was involved in a love affair with a girl. “However, he got upset following the girl’s rejection and that could be the reason for his suicide,” source told HT.
A case has been registered under section 174 of Crpc (Police to enquire and report on suicide).
