With the State government planning to conduct the local body elections soon, the Chief Minister held a review meeting on the proposal of increasing BC reservations at Secretariat here on Monday.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Ministers Damodara Raja Narsimha, Ponnam Prabhakar, Seethakka, Konda Surekha, Chief Minister’s Advisor Vem Narender Reddy, MLC Theenmar Mallanna, former minister K Janareddy, BC Commission Chairman Vakulabharanam Krishna Mohan, Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari and other senior officials were present in the meeting.
During the meeting, the officials explained to the Chief Minister the procedure followed for the last panchayat elections and the preparation for the upcoming panchayat elections.
As the caste enumeration has already been approved, the Chief Minister asked the officials how it would be if panchayat elections were to be conducted based on that and how much time would be taken for that.
Officials explained that the caste census was conducted in Karnataka in 2015, in Bihar in 2023, and the details of the caste census in Andhra Pradesh are yet to be released.
Officials further stated that the caste enumeration format adopted by the Union government in 2011 has 53 columns, and added that if the caste census is taken up by adding three more columns, it would take at least five and a half months.
The Chief Minister ordered the officials to prepare the necessary plan to conduct the elections soon without stopping the funds coming from the Central government to the local bodies along with the increase in BC reservations.
He also suggested to discuss legal matters with the Advocate General and directed the officials to study the matter of reservations in other States.
“If a report is prepared on the reservation issue, we will meet again before the Legislative Assembly sessions and take a final decision in this regard,” the Chief Minister said.(NSS)
