Telangana government to regulate school fees

Hyderabad,  20th May 2024 :The Telangana government is taking significant steps to regulate school fees in private unaided schools to address concerns over rising education costs. In response to demands from parents and recommendations from various committees, the state has proposed a series of measures aimed at controlling fee hikes and ensuring transparency in fee structures.

According to recent announcements, the Telangana government has stipulated that any increase in school fees should not exceed 10% of the fee levied in the previous academic year. This regulation is enforced by the school-level fee committees, which include representatives from the school management, principals, teachers, and parents from the parent-teacher association. If these committees fail to reach a consensus, the matter is escalated to the State Level Fee Regulatory Committee, chaired by a retired High Court judge.

In addition to capping fee hikes, the government has mandated that school managements submit audited accounts and proposed fee structures at least three months before the commencement of the next academic year. This process is designed to ensure that fee increases are justified and transparent.

Furthermore, the government has implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with these regulations. These SOPs also include guidelines for maintaining COVID-19 safety protocols within schools, such as allowing students to continue online classes if parents are reluctant to send them back to physical classrooms.

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to making education more affordable and accessible, while also maintaining high standards of transparency and accountability in the administration of school fees.
