Brussels, April 04 (QNA) – United Nations Secretary-General’s Humanitarian Envoy Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Muraikhi said that weak capacity to deliver humanitarian aid inside Syria is a major concern for the humanitarian community that supports the Syrian people.
Al Muraikhi stressed the importance of de-politicized, principled and needs-based humanitarian assistance which fall within the framework of international humanitarian law and human rights law.
The UN envoy was addressing a session on ‘Humanitarian aid inside Syria- Needs, challenges and the way forward’, held as part of the “Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region”, which kicked off in Brussels today and continues for two days.
He expressed his gratitude to the support provided by the State of Qatar and other GCC countries based on principled humanitarian response in order to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, lauding the keenness of leaders and humanitarian organizations in GCC to continue their support and allocate financial resources to the United Nations efforts concerned with the situation in Syria.
“An estimated 4.7 million people live in hard-to-reach areas, and about 30 percent of them live in areas controlled by ISIS group,” he said, adding that only a few international and national NGOs can reach these people.
Al Muraikhi called on the international community to strengthen the steadfastness of the Syrian people to enable them to take the initiative and actively share the responsibility to meet their needs, stressing that the past experience proved that the continuation of assistance approach, which depends on the provision of minimum services aimed at maintaining life, led the Syrian community to lose an essential part of its cohesion and resilience as well as its own ability to withstand and survive.
The Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, and the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross also spoke at the meeting. (QNA)
