Finnish president, Jordanian king discuss security challenges

LONDON(RAHNUMA): Finland’s President Alexander Stubb and King Abdullah of Jordan discussed security challenges in their respective regions during a meeting at Al-Husseiniya Palace in Amman on Sunday.

The two countries are marking 60 years of diplomatic relations this year, with collaboration in the education and technology sectors, reported the Petra News Agency.

Stubb stressed the shared commitment of both countries to achieving stability through mediation, as well as Jordan’s initiatives to foster peace in the Middle East.

King Abdullah emphasized the importance of maintaining the US-Iran ceasefire and pursuing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and promote stability, Petra added.

He stressed that the ceasefire in Lebanon must put an end to Israel’s aggression. He called on the international community to help stop Israeli actions in Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank which undermine prospects for peace and threaten to plunge the region into conflict.

Finland joined NATO in 2023 after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 and increased its military buildup near the Finnish border. The Finnish Border Guard has trained for all-out war with Russia, after Moscow threatened the Baltic country with action — on several occasions — if it assisted Ukraine through its territory.

The talks were attended by several key figures, including Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Alaa Batayneh, the director of the Office of His Majesty; Sami Smeirat, the minister of digital economy and entrepreneurship and escort of honor; Fayiz Khouri, the non-resident ambassador of Jordan to Finland; and Anne Meskanen, the non-resident ambassador of Finland to Jordan.
