Rahnuma:Congress, Rahul Gandhi biggest challenges to democracy BJP Bhubaneswar, Nov 2 . The ruling BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the opposition Congress and Leader of Opposition(LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, accusing them of attempting to undermine democratic institutions and create confusion over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Addressing a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Dr Trivedi said the world has been passing through a period of geopolitical and economic uncertainty, but India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing major economies under the Modi government.

Referring to the World Bank’s 2025 report, he said India has made significant progress in reducing poverty over the past 12–13 years. He said India is making significant advances in artificial intelligence, defence manufacturing and emerging technologies, besides strengthening its internal and external security. However, he alleged that certain forces, both within and outside the country, are uncomfortable with India’s progress and accused the Opposition of becoming a tool in their hands. “But the manner in which the Opposition is behaving today gives the impression that it cannot stomach India’s progress and the country’s growing sense of pride. At this juncture, the Congress party itself and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi have become the biggest threats to Indian democracy,” Trivedi alleged. Citing Congress’s prolonged absence from power in several states, he pointed out that the Congress has not formed a government in Odisha since 2000 and referred to its electoral setbacks in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Nagaland and Sikkim for the last several decades.

These states collectively account for around 230 Lok Sabha seats, he said, questioning how the Congress expected to secure a substantial majority from the remaining constituencies despite its weak electoral presence in these regions. Explaining the electoral roll revision process, Trivedi said Booth Level Officers (BLOs), appointed through the Election Commission’s administrative machinery, are responsible for carrying out the exercise of adding and deleting names from electoral rolls. Political parties, he said, appointed Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to monitor the process and raise objections wherever necessary. Citing the presence of around 12 lakh BLOs and 22 lakh BLAs across the country, he questioned why Congress representatives had not raised objections at various stages of the revision process. He said the revised electoral rolls were shared with political parties at the district level and subsequently taken up at the state and national levels, providing ample opportunities to raise objections. Trivedi also referred to statements by Congress leaders in Kerala and Karnataka, claiming that some of them have acknowledged the need to remove bogus voter entries through SIR. Addressing allegations concerning large-scale deletions from electoral rolls, Trivedi cited figures relating to voters who had shifted residences, duplicate entries and those who could not be traced during the revision exercise. He also criticised the Opposition’s protests, including its actions at All India Radio and demonstrations outside the Prime Minister’s residence and other institutions.

He alleged that such actions were aimed at creating political instability and undermining public confidence in constitutional institutions. Later, Dr Trivedi joined a massive rally in Kolkata at 3 pm under the banner of the “Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy Campaign”. It began after floral tributes were paid to the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at College Square. –IANS grm/dan

Congress, Akalis, BJP joined hands to derail development: Punjab CM Chandigarh, Nov 2 (IANS) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday slammed the Congress, the Akali Dal and the BJP, calling them deeply corrupt parties that had joined hands to derail the state’s development and protect their shared political interests. Describing the forthcoming political battle as ‘One vs All’, he said that despite having different flags and election symbols, these parties shared the same intention of looting Punjab and exploiting its people. At a public gathering in Ghanaur in Patiala, the Chief Minister said the traditional parties are uncomfortable because an ordinary family’s son was honestly working for the welfare of every section of society. He asserted that the love and blessings of Punjabis were his greatest strength and warned the Opposition that, just as in 2022, the people would send its big leaders back home in 2027 as well. The Chief Minister pointed out that they have different flags and election symbols, but their intentions are the same. They cannot tolerate the fact that Punjab’s resources are now being utilised for the welfare of Punjabis rather than a handful of political families. He said these political parties were united in their efforts to loot Punjab, whereas he had shared the joys and sorrows of 3.25 crore Punjabis. The traditional parties were targeting him because they had realised that people were no longer willing to accept their politics of deception, corruption and family interests. “During their tenure, the Akali leadership developed interests in almost every business. These leaders forcibly took their share in every business venture, whereas I have chosen to share the happiness, struggles and hardships of ordinary people. They are uncomfortable because our government is working for the common people rather than powerful families,” he added. Highlighting the affection he received during his visits to villages, CM Mann said people’s love and blessings were his greatest strength and reward for serving Punjab. “Whenever I visit villages, my turban gets filled with flowers as people shower their love, blessings and affection on me. I do not have the backing of powerful families or wealthy interests, but I have the blessings of the people. As long as the people of Punjab stand with me, I do not care about the opposition,” he added. –IANS vg/dan
Gujarat: JP Nadda inaugurates AIIMS Rajkot’s Rs 39-crore cancer treatment facility Rajkot, Nov 2 (IANS) Cancer patients in Saurashtra will no longer have to travel long distances for several advanced radiotherapy procedures, with AIIMS Rajkot inaugurating a Rs 39-crore facility equipped with modern radiation treatment technology on Monday. The facility was inaugurated virtually by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda. It is expected to serve patients from Rajkot, Saurashtra and neighbouring districts, particularly those from rural and semi-urban areas who face financial and logistical difficulties in accessing specialised cancer treatment. Gujarat Minister of State for Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education, Praful Pansheriya, also joined the inauguration ceremony through video conferencing from Gandhinagar. Addressing the programme, Pansheriya said the facility would provide significant relief to cancer patients and their families, who often have to undertake long journeys for treatment and follow-up consultations. “Cancer affects not only the patient but the entire family. Travelling long distances for treatment and follow-up increases the financial and emotional burden on patients and their families. The availability of this facility at AIIMS Rajkot will provide major relief, particularly to patients from rural, semi-urban and economically weaker families,” he said. Developed with an investment of approximately Rs 39 crore by the Central government, the facility houses a high-energy Linear Accelerator, a wide-bore CT simulator and a High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy unit. The equipment will allow treatment using techniques such as Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Image-Guided Radiotherapy, stereotactic techniques and brachytherapy. These methods allow radiation treatment to be delivered with greater precision while improving the protection of surrounding healthy tissues. Patients with different types of cancer, including head and neck, gynaecological and breast cancers, will be able to access these specialised treatment options at the institute. Referring to the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, Pansheriya said: “Financial assistance under the scheme is important in ensuring that eligible patients can access treatment. The government’s priority is to ensure that no family is deprived of necessary cancer care because of financial constraints.” He also highlighted the state government’s focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure, developing trained medical manpower, promoting early diagnosis, improving referral systems and increasing public awareness about cancer. “Apart from providing treatment, AIIMS Rajkot would contribute to medical education, professional training, research and public health,” he added. Pansheriya congratulated the Union Health Ministry, the AIIMS Rajkot leadership, its Department of Radiation Oncology and the medical, technical and administrative teams involved in establishing the facility. He also acknowledged Nadda’s support and expressed confidence that the facility would benefit thousands of cancer patients and their families. Lok Sabha MP Parshottam Rupala, Rajya Sabha MP Kesaridevsinh Jhala, Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava, AIIMS Rajkot President Prof Dr J S Titiyal and Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Prof Dr L N Doraijaran were among those present. Faculty members, doctors, healthcare workers and students also attended the programme. –IANS mys/dan
Karnataka extends helping hand to cyclone-hit Andhra Pradesh, deploys 500 power personnel Bengaluru, Nov 2 (IANS) The Karnataka government is extending assistance to Andhra Pradesh to restore electricity supply infrastructure damaged by Cyclone Arnab. Responding to a request from the Andhra Pradesh government for manpower and equipment to undertake restoration work, Karnataka has decided to provide support in the spirit of cooperation and solidarity between the neighbouring states. The assistance is being provided under the supervision of Energy Minister K.J. George. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar spoke to his Andhra counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu over the phone and assured him of Karnataka’s full support during the difficult period. “Karnataka stands firmly with the people of Andhra Pradesh. Electricity is an essential service, and its immediate restoration is an urgent necessity for the well-being of people affected by the disaster,” he said. Energy Minister George said Karnataka would work closely with Andhra Pradesh officials through effective field-level coordination and the use of advanced equipment to restore electricity supply at the earliest. As part of the assistance, Karnataka is deploying 500 skilled linemen (powermen), 15 Palfinger trucks equipped with cranes and earth augers, and 25 tractor-mounted drilling machines to undertake restoration work in cyclone-affected areas and expedite the resumption of power supply. The teams were mobilised on an emergency basis and left for Andhra Pradesh on Monday afternoon, reaching the state by midnight. For effective deployment and coordination, each electricity supply company (ESCOM) has appointed a single point of contact (SPOC) to coordinate with the authorities concerned in Andhra Pradesh. The linemen have been divided into teams of 10 members each, with every team headed by a Junior Engineer (JE) or Assistant Engineer (AE). An Executive Engineer (EE) from each Operations and Maintenance (O&M) circle has also been assigned to oversee and coordinate the overall deployment of the teams. The Palfinger trucks equipped with cranes and earth augers, as well as the tractor-mounted drilling machines, will be accompanied by their respective drivers and operators to ensure the effective use of equipment at the work sites. The Karnataka government will also provide necessary contingency funds to meet unforeseen expenses related to the travel, accommodation and other essential arrangements for the deployed personnel. The timely assistance reflects Karnataka’s commitment to supporting Andhra Pradesh under the ‘Neighbour First’ principle during natural disasters and ensuring the speedy restoration of essential electricity services to people affected by the cyclone. –IANS mka/vd
Over 44,000 government buildings connected to solar power, saving Rs 700 crore annually: PM Modi New Delhi, Nov 2 (IANS) More than 44,000 government buildings across India have been connected to solar energy, generating annual savings of around Rs 700 crore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday, highlighting the country’s progress in renewable energy and its commitment to strengthening energy security through clean power. Addressing the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit at the Bharat Mandapam here, the Prime Minister said India has made significant strides in the renewable energy sector over the past 12 years, connecting industries, farms and households with solar power. “Over the last 12 years, we have worked to connect industries and farms with solar power. More than 44,000 government buildings across India are now connected to solar energy, generating annual savings of around Rs 700 crore,” he said “Farmers across the country are also benefiting from the PM-KUSUM scheme. Through this initiative, more than 30 lakh farmers have been provided with solar-powered irrigation facilities. Estimates suggest that each farmer can save around Rs 1 lakh annually by using solar pumps,” the Prime Minister added. PM Modi said the government aims to bring every government building, school, college, hospital and street-lighting system under solar energy to further expand the country’s clean energy infrastructure. The Prime Minister also highlighted the progress made under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024 with the target of installing rooftop solar panels in one crore households. “More than 65 lakh households have joined the initiative in the past 24-25 months,” he said. Emphasising India’s commitment to global climate goals, PM Modi said the country had achieved its target of meeting 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources in 2025, five years ahead of the schedule set under the Paris Agreement. “Under the Paris Agreement, India also pledged to meet 50 per cent of its installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources. We achieved this target in 2025, five years ahead of schedule. Today, more than 50 per cent of India’s installed power capacity comes from non-fossil fuel sources,” the Prime Minister stated.
Bihar: Tejashwi Yadav seeks termination of two independent MLCs for joining BJP Patna, Nov 2 (IANS) The controversy over two independent members of the Bihar Legislative Council allegedly joining the BJP shortly after their election has intensified, with Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav demanding the termination of their memberships under the anti-defection law. “It is absolutely clear that an independent MLC cannot join any political party after being elected. If they do so, their membership is liable to be terminated. The memberships of both these individuals must be revoked; otherwise, one might as well tear up the Constitution and throw it away,” Tejashwi said. The controversy concerns Banshidhar Brajvasi, elected from the Tirhut Graduates’ constituency, and Rahul Raj, elected from the Saran Teachers’ constituency. Both were elected as independent candidates in the recent Bihar Legislative Council elections and subsequently joined the BJP. On Monday, a high-level delegation of the Jan Suraaj Party, led by former MLC Professor Rambali Singh Chandravanshi, visited the Legislative Council and submitted a formal petition along with supporting documents to Chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh. The party has demanded the immediate termination of the memberships of the two MLCs under the anti-defection law. Speaking to the media after meeting the Chairman, Chandravanshi said Bihar had historically been regarded as the birthplace of democracy and that democratic values rested on public morality and accountability. He alleged that both MLCs had visited the BJP office within 72 hours of their election and formally joined the party. According to him, they received membership receipts and wore BJP scarves during the induction programme. Chandravanshi further alleged that after the possibility of legal action emerged, BJP state president Sanjay Saraogi deleted social media posts relating to their induction and subsequently claimed that the two MLCs had merely visited the party office to extend their support. Citing the membership receipt numbers, Chandravanshi said the Jan Suraaj delegation had submitted documentary evidence to the Legislative Council Chairman and warned that the issue could no longer be ignored. Explaining the legal provisions, Chandravanshi referred to his own disqualification under the anti-defection law approximately three years ago. “Three years ago, I too was removed under the anti-defection law in this very Legislative Council. While there may be some flexibility or scope for interpretation in the case of members elected on party tickets, the law is clear regarding independent members under the 52nd Constitutional Amendment. If an independent member joins a political party after being elected, his membership is liable to be terminated with immediate effect,” he said. The Jan Suraaj Party has urged the Legislative Council Chairman to examine the evidence and take appropriate action against the two members. The matter has now placed the spotlight on the application of the anti-defection provisions to independent members of legislative bodies, with the final decision resting with the competent authority under the Constitution. –IANS ajk/dan
