Hiroshima, Nagasaki urge Japanese govt to uphold non-nuclear principles

Tokyo, Jan 10 (IANS) The city assemblies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have adopted statements urging the Japanese government to adhere to the country’s Three Non-Nuclear Principles, Kyodo News reported.

The Hiroshima City Assembly unanimously adopted its statement on Friday, pointing out that the ruling party’s attempt to revise the non-nuclear principles has caused concern, and strongly urging the Japanese government to take the feelings of people in the atomic-bombed cities seriously and to uphold the Three Non-Nuclear Principles, the report said.

The Nagasaki City Assembly passed its statement on Thursday by a majority vote, noting that successive Japanese governments have regarded the Three Non-Nuclear Principles as a national policy. It said the ruling party’s intended revision of the principles while amending the country’s security documents is totally unacceptable.

On August 6 and 9, 1945, in an effort to force Japan, which had launched a war of aggression, to surrender as soon as possible, the US military dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Three Non-Nuclear Principles, not possessing, not producing and not allowing the introduction of nuclear weapons into Japanese territory, were first declared by then Japanese Prime Minister Eisaku Sato in 1967 and formally adopted by the parliament in 1971, establishing them as Japan’s basic nuclear policy. The National Security Strategy, one of the three documents approved by the Cabinet in 2022, states, “The basic policy of adhering to the Three Non-Nuclear Principles will remain unchanged in the future.”

Japanese media have previously reported that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is considering reviewing the third of The Three Non-Nuclear Principles, which prohibits nuclear weapons from entering Japan’s territory, when updating related documents.

Earlier on December 24, a Japanese civil body had submitted a petition to the country’s foreign ministry, calling on the government to clearly reaffirm its commitment to the Three Non-Nuclear Principles as a national policy.

Gujarat plans 10 natural farming produce kiosks in Valsad; CM inaugurates first centre Valsad (Gujarat), Nov 3 (IANS) Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Tuesday inaugurated a natural farming produce sales centre in Valsad district, part of a proposed network of 10 kiosks in the district aimed at giving farmers a direct market for their produce and ensuring better returns. The ‘Prabha Natural Farming Produce Sales Centre’ is intended to connect farmers practising natural farming with consumers through a more organised supply chain, reducing the gap between production and retail sales. Patel inspected the centre and was briefed about the products available for sale. The outlet offers naturally grown vegetables, fruits, grains and honey. It also stocks inputs used in natural farming, including Ghan Jeevamrut, Gomutra, Beejamrut and Jeevamrut, which farmers can purchase for use in their fields. The initiative aims to provide farmers with better marketing arrangements and consumers with easier access to naturally grown agricultural produce. The proposed 10 kiosks across Valsad district are expected to strengthen the supply chain from farms to consumers and help cultivators secure fair prices. The sales centre is also intended to raise awareness among consumers about naturally produced food and encourage wider adoption of natural farming practices among cultivators. Gujarat has been promoting natural farming through financial assistance and training programmes. In 2020, the state announced assistance of Rs 900 per month towards the maintenance of an indigenous cow for eligible farmers practising cow-based natural farming, along with support for purchasing kits used to prepare natural farming inputs such as Jeevamrut. At the national level, the Centre approved the National Mission on Natural Farming in November 2024 to encourage chemical-free farming based on livestock-integrated practices and diversified cropping systems. The mission also seeks to improve soil health, reduce cultivation costs and strengthen ecological sustainability. Finance, Urban Development and Urban Housing Minister Kanu Desai and Lok Sabha MP and Whip Dhaval Patel were present at the inauguration. Valsad MLA Bharat Patel, District Development Officer Atirag Chaplot and Superintendent of Police (SP) Yuvrajsinh Jadeja also attended the event. –IANS mys/uk
ED files prosecution complaint in Puducherry cryptocurrency fraud case, attaches Rs 14.16 cr assets Chennai, Nov 3 (IANS) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a prosecution complaint before the Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court in Puducherry in connection with an alleged cryptocurrency investment fraud involving M/s Pan India Crypto Currency, popularly known as Hashpe, and provisionally attached assets worth Rs 14.16 crore. The attached assets include immovable properties in Tamil Nadu, Haryana and New Delhi, besides BMW cars and balances held in bank accounts, the ED’s Chennai Zonal Office-II said in a statement on Tuesday. The investigation uncovered an alleged fraudulent investment scheme that collected approximately Rs 112.91 crore from investors by promising unusually high returns, luxury cars, foreign tours and lucrative referral commissions. According to the ED, the scheme operated through the website “hashpe.io” and a multi-level marketing network managed by Imran Basha, Hitesh Kumar, Syed Usman alias Babu, Dhamodharan and their associates. Investors were promised daily returns of one per cent and potential earnings of up to three times their original investment. The promoters encouraged investments through cash payments, bank transfers and cryptocurrency assets. The platform offered fictitious cryptocurrency tokens, including TCX and Hashpe, while displaying profits without undertaking genuine trading activities, the agency alleged. Investigators found that money collected from new investors was used to pay earlier investors and commissions to agents designated as “Leaders”, indicating a Ponzi-type operation. The scheme eventually collapsed after withdrawals were blocked and the investment platform was disabled, leaving numerous investors facing substantial financial losses. Of the Rs 112.91 crore allegedly mobilised, only a portion was returned to investors. The remaining funds were routed through bank accounts belonging to M/s HIFY Circle, associated individuals and entities, and cryptocurrency wallets. The ED alleged that substantial amounts were diverted towards personal expenditure, repayment of loans, commissions, promotional activities and acquisition of assets. The agency has identified approximately Rs 49.54 crore as proceeds of crime during its investigation. The money-laundering investigation originated from an FIR registered by the Cyber Crime Police Station in Puducherry under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The ED had earlier conducted searches at premises linked to Hashpe and its promoters on September 1, 2026, as part of its investigation into the alleged fraud. –IANS aal/dan
Govt reviews watershed projects in Pune, urges upkeep of water structures New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) Department of Land Resources (DoLR) Secretary Dilip Kumar reviewed watershed development works under the Watershed Development Component of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana 2.0 (WDC-PMKSY 2.0) in villages of Maharashtra’s Pune district, an official statement said on Saturday. Kumar urged villagers to take collective responsibility for regular maintenance and repair of the water harvesting structures created under Watershed Development Scheme, to keep these assets functional for the next 20 years. He also called for sustained efforts to transform villages under the Khed Project into water-secure and self-reliant communities, on the lines of Hiware Bazar. The review was done in Varude, Gulani and Wafgaon villages of Pune district, on October 30, 2026. Villagers said that watershed development works across 11 villages under the Khed Project had improved groundwater levels, enabling farmers to cultivate two to three crops annually thereby increasing agricultural income and rural livelihoods. Despite the drought-like conditions this year, water stored in farm ponds and improved water levels in wells associated with cement nala bunds and CCT structures have helped irrigate standing crops, according to villagers. The key objectives of watershed development under the scheme include soil and water conservation measures, enhancing agricultural productivity, and promoting sustainable rural development. “Water is the foundation of our future. Every drop of rain must be conserved to make villages water-secure and self-reliant,” Kumar told villagers. The government official visited watershed structures developed using the ridge-to-valley approach, including Continuous Contour Trenches (CCT), earthen nala bunds, cement nala bunds, Kolhapuri-type weirs and ponds for water storage. He reviewed the effectiveness of these structures in reducing rainwater runoff, enhancing groundwater recharge and improving water availability for agriculture, changes in groundwater levels and benefits received by beneficiaries. The government also reviewed farm ponds, horticulture plantations and agricultural equipment provided to beneficiaries under the scheme, along with benefits extended to women’s self-help groups.

The deceased have been identified as Ajit Panwar, his wife Pooja Panwar and their five-month-old son Shivanshu. They were residents of Indra Colony in Ashta town of neighbouring Sehore district. The accident occurred in the Salaslai police station area when the family was travelling from Bolai village towards Ayyapur for temple darshan. According to preliminary investigation, a stray dog suddenly came in front of their motorcycle. Ajit, who was riding the two-wheeler, tried to avoid hitting the animal but lost control of the motorcycle, which swerved into the path of a pickup truck approaching from the opposite direction. The pickup truck hit the motorcycle with considerable force, leaving all three family members critically injured. The motorcycle was badly damaged in the collision. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared all three dead. The family had left home on Saturday to visit a temple and offer prayers to mark the completion of five months of their son Shivanshu. Karnataka using KMF price hikes to cover financial mismanagement, alleges Pralhad Joshi New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi on Saturday criticised the Congress government in Karnataka over the hike in Nandini curd prices, alleging that the state was using the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) as a tool to offset the financial strain caused by what he termed fiscal mismanagement. In a statement, Joshi said the Congress government has created a new record in price hikes by imposing unprecedented increases on essential commodities, thereby putting an additional burden on ordinary people. He alleged that the government led by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar was using KMF to cover up its financial mismanagement and depleted state coffers by resorting to excessive price hikes. According to Joshi, the price of 500 ml Nandini curd has been increased from Rs 28 to Rs 34, a hike of Rs 6 or 21.43 per cent. Similarly, the price of one litre of curd has been raised from Rs 54 to Rs 68, an increase of Rs 14 or 25.93 per cent. “While giving curd to the people, the Congress government is enjoying the butter,” he remarked, accusing the government of exploiting consumers. Pointing out that the government increased the price of milk by Rs 8 per litre just a day earlier, Joshi said the latest increase in curd prices, ranging from 21 to 26 per cent, would severely affect poor and middle-class families. He further alleged that the Congress government, which had made development a distant dream in Karnataka, was now collecting money from the poorest sections of society through repeated price increases in KMF products. The Union Minister said the successive hikes reflected the government’s anti-people policies and its failure to manage the state’s finances effectively. The Karnataka government has announced an Rs 8 per litre hike in the price of Nandini milk, which takes effect on November 1, 2026. The government states that out of the Rs 8 increase, Rs 7 goes directly to dairy farmers and Rs 1 goes to the milk cooperatives (KMF) for operational expenses. –IANS mka/skp
