Hyderabad, May 22 (RAHNUMA): Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has achieved a rare milestone by completing 2,000 kidney transplant surgeries, emerging as one of the country’s leading government healthcare institutions in organ transplantation. The institute created a record as a government hospital with 2,000 kidney transplants under a single institutional programme.
Announcing the achievement on Friday, NIMS Director Dr. Beerappa said the institute completed its first kidney transplant in 1989, and has now successfully crossed the 2,000-transplant mark. He credited the extraordinary commitment and coordinated efforts of the Urology and Nephrology departments, along with the supporting medical staff, for this landmark accomplishment.
Dr. Beerappa also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha for their continued support in strengthening advanced healthcare services at NIMS, particularly for economically weaker sections.
The milestone assumes greater significance as NIMS has served as a lifeline for poor and middle-class patients suffering from end-stage renal disease. Of the 2,000 transplant recipients, nearly 95 per cent received treatment completely free of cost through the Aarogyasri health insurance scheme and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).
Beyond the transplant surgery itself, the Telangana government is also providing lifelong post-transplant immunosuppressive medications free of cost under the Aarogyasri scheme, significantly reducing the long-term financial burden on patients.
Congratulating the Urology team, Dr. Beerappa said the department played a pivotal role in building the transplant programme into one of the most successful in the public healthcare sector. The team has handled several highly complex procedures, including kidney transplants involving multiple renal vessels, paediatric transplants, and repeat transplant surgeries.
NIMS also holds the distinction of performing South India’s first robotic kidney transplant in a government hospital, highlighting the growing technological capabilities of Telangana’s public healthcare institutions.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha congratulated the doctors and staff of NIMS for the remarkable achievement, stating that the success once again demonstrates Telangana’s capacity to deliver world-class advanced healthcare through government hospitals.
He said the state government is committed to expanding organ transplantation services across public hospitals to ensure that high-end, life-saving treatment remains accessible free of cost to the poor.
The Minister recalled the recent establishment of an advanced Organ Transplant Centre at Gandhi Hospital, equipped with six modular operation theatres and modern infrastructure. He also said an Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence is being set up at TIMS Hospital, Sanathnagar.
In addition, the government is working to establish organ retrieval centres across the state, which will significantly strengthen the organ transplant ecosystem and expand access to advanced transplant services within the public healthcare system, he added.
