
Hyderabad, June 11 (RAHNUMA): Stressing the urgent need for sustainable living, Dr A Gangagni Rao, director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) – Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), said that adopting a plastic-free lifestyle is the most effective way to control environmental pollution.
Speaking at a World Environment Day lecture organized by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), Dr. Rao highlighted the interconnected challenges of waste management, climate change, and energy security. He advocated scientific processing of biodegradable waste through composting and biomethanation, and promoted the use of anaerobic digestion technologies to convert organic waste into renewable energy and organic fertilizers.
Presiding over the event, Prof. E. Sudha Rani, Director Academic In-charge, said for sustainable development that is beneficial to the environment, economic survival and accessible to the society. Stating that the misuse of plastic is causing serious damage to the environment, she emphasized reducing plastic use, adopting reusable alternatives, and promoting recycling as a shared responsibility. She noted that BRAOU has already banned plastic usage on campus and is committed to eco-friendly practices.
