Hyderabad, July 3 (RAHNUMA): Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has sounded a caution to Kharif farmers about possible challenges due to El Niño effect. He urged them to plan crops carefully and use water wisely during the season.
Speaking to farmers at a series of official programmes during his tour of Suryapet district on Friday, the Minister said agriculture in Telangana has become like a festive activity under the Congress government and there has been record paddy production and large-scale procurement.
“Bonus support for seven fine rice varieties is also continuing. These steps will help farmers and help improved their conditions. But, farmers should be wary of the fact that El Niño has impacted rainfall in many parts of the country. Farmers should stay alert and adjust their farming methods based on weather changes,” he said.
The Minister said the southwest monsoon has weakened due to El Niño and India saw about 40 per cent less rainfall in June 2026, making it one of the driest Junes in many years. Telangana also recorded about 22 per cent less rainfall in June which delayed sowing in several areas, he said.
The Minister explained that a large part of the Godavari river basin lies in Maharashtra and poor rainfall there has delayed water flow into Telangana.
Uttam Kumar Reddy advised farmers to avoid crops that require a lot of water in areas where supply is uncertain. He suggested growing crops that need less water and can withstand dry conditions.
The Minister said water from reservoirs should be used carefully and drinking water should be given top priority, followed by irrigation needs. Proper planning will be important if rainfall remains low, he said.
The Minister said the government is closely monitoring rainfall and water levels, which will help in taking timely decisions. He assured farmers that the government will take steps to address the impact of dry weather.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said the government will continue to support farmers while also focusing on efficient water use. He expressed confidence that with proper planning and cooperation, Telangana can manage the challenges of El Niño and continue agricultural growth.
He inspected the ongoing construction of Integrated School at Gaddipalli and other works.
Kodad MLA N. Padmavati Reddy also took part in the programmes.
