Telangana backs handloom sector to boost weaver livelihoods: Uttam

Hyderabad, June 6 (RAHNUMA): Minister for Irrigation and civil Supplies. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday assured total support from the state government to the handloom sector, which provides livelihoods and empowers women.

He stressed that the Telangana government is committed to the welfare of weavers and no weaver should have to leave this profession due to economic difficulties.

Speaking at the “Thread Pochampally” exhibition at HITEX, the Minister praised the creativity and hard work of weavers and artisans. He said the event is a tribute to thousands of weaving families whose skills have given Pochampally international fame.

The Minister congratulated the organisers, weavers, designers and all those who made the exhibition successful. He noted that over 100 stalls are showcasing authentic Pochampally sarees, fabrics and contemporary products.

Visitors can see live weaving demonstrations and understand the Ikat tie-and-dye process. This gives them a chance to connect directly with the weavers. The government is improving market access through direct marketing, exhibitions and e-commerce so that benefits reach the artisans directly, he said.

The Minister stressed the need for innovation through collaborations with designers and educational institutions. This will help create products that appeal to young consumers and global markets.

He also highlighted the importance of digital connectivity and said that branding and online platforms will help take Pochampally products to customers worldwide.

To secure the future, the next generation must be empowered through training in design, entrepreneurship and digital commerce. The goal is to transform handlooms into a globally competitive creative economy with sustainable livelihoods for all weaving families, he said.

The Minister urged people to support weavers by buying authentic handloom products and said that this will sustain families and preserve Telangana’s cultural identity.
