WHEN LAWYERS ARE UNSAFE, CONSTITUTION IS AT RISK: Dr KARANAM RAJESH

Hyderabad, Feb.5 (RAHNUMA):The murder of advocate Swapna, a practicing lawyer at Chevella Court in Ranga Reddy district, has sparked serious concerns over the safety of legal professionals, with international lawyer Dr. Karanam Rajesh Kumar calling it a direct threat to India’s constitutional framework.

In a strongly worded statement, Dr. Kumar emphasized that advocates are essential pillars of democracy and frontline defenders of justice. He warned that attacks on lawyers weaken the justice delivery system and undermine public confidence in constitutional governance.

Highlighting the absence of a comprehensive Advocate Protection Act in India, he noted that more than five lakh advocates nationwide have long demanded dedicated legislation to safeguard legal professionals from threats and violence.

Comparing India with countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Canada, Australia and France, Dr. Kumar said several nations already have specific laws or mechanisms protecting lawyers, exposing a significant legislative gap in India.

He urged the Central Government to enact strict laws ensuring severe punishment for attacks on advocates, stating that protecting lawyers is essential to protecting courts, justice, and the Constitution itself.
