WASHINGTON(RAHNUMA): The World Bank has backed the Syrian Arab Republic’s ongoing recovery efforts following talks with Syrian officials on the sidelines of the IMF (International Monetary Fund)-World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington.
The discussions, led by Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh and Syrian Central Bank Gov. Abdulkader Husrieh, included a previously agreed portfolio of 10 grant-funded projects worth more than $1 billion over three years, focused on infrastructure and reform.
Anna Bjerde, the managing director of operations at the World Bank, said she was “inspired” by the determination of Syrian officials to deliver prosperity for their people, adding that the institution remained committed to supporting Syria’s reconstruction through investment in infrastructure and human development.
She also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutions and developing skills, particularly among the younger generations, as part of long-term recovery efforts.
Syria is seeking to deepen cooperation with international partners to rebuild its economy after more than a decade of conflict.
Officials have said international support would be a critical factor in restoring essential services and advancing economic stability.
