Hyderabad, April 29 (RAHNUMA): Officials from the Telangana State Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation ( TGMSIDC) submitted a report on Wednesday to the Minister for Health Damodar Raja Narasimha, detailing the procurement of medicines for patients visiting government hospitals.
They stated that since the formation of the Congress government in the Telangana state, spanning a period of two and a half years, medicines worth approximately ₹1,000 crore were procured, of which only medicines worth ₹9 lakh had expired.
It was explained that between 2017 and 2023, medicines worth approximately ₹2,700 crore were procured, of which a staggering ₹88 crore worth of medicines went to waste. It was noted that the wastage was particularly high during the 2021–2023 period.
Detailed figures indicating the value of medicines wasted in each specific year were submitted to the Minister.
These statistics clearly demonstrate that medicines worth a massive ₹88 crore were wasted during the tenure of the previous government.
The report submitted by officials revealed that medicines worth ₹26 crore in 2021, ₹27 crore in 2022, and ₹12 crore in 2023 expired and were subsequently discarded.
Officials explained to Raja Narasimha that, compared to the past, the wastage of medicines has now been completely eliminated.
They revealed that medicines are being recalled from hospitals three months prior to their expiration dates.
The officials further stated that tenders are being conducted in such a way that the entire cost of any expired medicines is borne by the very company that supplied them.
TGMSIDC officials explained to the Health Minister that, over the past two and a half years, the contractor has supplied an equivalent value of medicines free of cost to replace the medicines worth ₹9 lakh that had expired.
