A year of women in the Islamic Economy and OIC in 50 headlines

© Provided by The Rahnuma Daily

Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8 we list 50 news stories on Salaam Gateway since this same period last year that address issues and developments related to women in the Islamic Economy and countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The biggest stories concerning Muslim women in the mainstream news over the one year covered the veil. These stories were topped by the visibility of hijabi Muslim women participating at the Rio Olympics and their achievements there, followed by burkini-clad women being banned from French beaches and the fallout from those incidents, then by the prevailing concerns of non-OIC countries by the use of the face veil.

From OIC countries, the biggest headlines were reserved for the changing socio-economic climate in Saudi Arabia, most recently culminating in the appointment of women to top finance jobs in the kingdom.

The headlines also highlight Muslim women in top finance jobs in Indonesia and Malaysia, where women, who are more prevalent in the workforce as compared to Saudi Arabia, have been encouraged throughout the year to upskill and use technology and the Internet to advance economically.
