Hyderabad, Sept.10 (RAHNUMA): Labour, Energy and Mines Minister G. Vivek Venkataswamy said on Thursday that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) had appreciated the minimum wage policy implemented by the Telangana government and suggested that other states adopt the State’s model.
Replying to questions in the Assembly, the Minister said Telangana had emerged as a role model in the implementation of minimum wages. He said the Congress government was committed to ensuring fair wages and greater financial security for workers and would not compromise on their welfare.
More than 1.10 crore workers were employed across various industries and organisations in the State, he said. The revised minimum wages came into effect from June 1, 2026, through Government Order (GO) No. 6.
A Cabinet sub-committee comprising Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu was constituted to decide on the wage revision. The decision was taken after extensive consultations with industries, labour unions and other stakeholders, Vivek said.
He alleged that adequate attention had not been paid to revising minimum wages during the previous 10 years of BRS rule. “After coming to power, the Congress government prioritised workers’ issues and revised the minimum wages,” he said.
Responding to concerns over the non-implementation of revised wages in organisations such as NTPC and Singareni, the Minister assured the House that an inquiry would be conducted and steps taken to ensure 100 per cent compliance. The government was also considering a wage hike for Singareni contract workers, he said.
Vivek Venkataswamy said the government was favourably considering the establishment of a special corporation to address the issues faced by outsourcing employees and that a meeting would be held soon on the proposal.
On the Sirpur Paper Mill issue, he said the matter was sub judice and further action would be taken after the court delivered its verdict.
