Bengal CM makes surprise visits to Fire Dept HQ, police stations

Kolkata, Aug 5 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday made surprise visits to police stations and the fire department headquarters in Kolkata.

Adhikari visited Watganj Police Station and Ekbalpur Police Station in the Kolkata Port area before heading to the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar, where he held discussions with Police Commissioner Ajay Nand.

Earlier in the day, Adhikari, who is also the Police Minister, attended a meeting at the Public Works Department before suddenly setting out to inspect police stations. Deputy Commissioner of Ports was present during the inspection.

The Chief Minister said help desks would be set up in every police station in the state to assist women. He enquired whether the process had begun at Watganj and Ekbalpur police stations and checked police station records.

After visiting Lalbazar, Adhikari went to the fire department headquarters, where he spoke to officials about the department’s preparedness to respond quickly in case of accidents or fire incidents. Officials confirmed that the visit was unannounced and part of his surprise inspections.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee also made a surprise visit to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.

He spoke about corruption in hospitals during the Trinamool Congress government era and emphasised the need to overcome it.
