INDIA-UK LAUNCH CRITICAL MINERALS OBSERVATORY

New Delhi / Hyderabad, June 4 (RAHNUMA): India and the United Kingdom on Thursday launched the India-UK Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) in New Delhi, a major initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation on critical mineral security and resilient supply chains.

The Observatory was formally inaugurated by G. Kishan Reddy, Union minister for coal and mines, and Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, United Kingdom. The platform is a joint initiative of TEXMiN, Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad and University of Cambridge.

Addressing the gathering, Kishan Reddy said critical minerals are essential for clean energy technologies, electric mobility, advanced manufacturing and strategic sectors. He noted that the Observatory would strengthen India’s critical mineral supply chain intelligence and support the objectives of the National Critical Mineral Mission.

The initiative, announced during the India-UK Prime Ministers’ bilateral engagement in October 2025 and formalized through a research collaboration agreement in March 2026, will provide real-time monitoring of global critical mineral supply chains, identify supply risks and generate market intelligence for policymakers, industry and researchers.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized that enhanced cooperation and information-sharing on critical minerals would contribute to economic growth, supply chain security and sustainable development in both the countries.
