Telangana becomes only State with a Medical College in every district: Harish Rao

Hyderabad, Sept.11 (NSS): BSR senior leader and former minister Harish Rao today said the Telangana becomes the only State with a Medical College in every district. He said he was proud to see that Telangana has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the only State in India to have a medical college in every district. With the recent approval of four new medical colleges, the State now has 34 government medical colleges, a remarkable transformation from just five before Telangana State formation.

He said under the leadership of former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, we’ve added 29 new medical colleges in just nine years, increasing the number of MBBS seats from 850 in 2014 to 4,090 today. This dramatic expansion allows Telangana to produce over 10,000 doctors every year, helping meet both local and global healthcare needs. “KCR’s vision of establishing a medical college in every district has been realized. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of Yadadri, Medak, Maheshwaram and Quthbullapur, where new colleges have been approved, and to the people of Mulugu, Narsampet, Gadwal, and Narayanapet, where colleges were approved last month”.

Harish Rao said the previous KCR government had secured funds and land for eight new medical colleges, but due to administrative delays under the Congress government, only four were approved last month by the NMC. “The Congress government has since appealed to the Centre, promising to meet all necessary conditions, and we are pleased that four additional colleges have now been approved. With these new approvals, Telangana’s government medical colleges now offer 4,090 MBBS seats, a fivefold increase in just nine years. Telangana State is also leading the country in MBBS seats with 22 seats per lakh people — an achievement we can all be proud of.”

“This journey began with former Chief Minister KCR’s recognition of the need to correct the disparities in healthcare and education that Telangana faced under united Andhra Pradesh. By ensuring every district had access to quality medical education, we’ve not only brought specialized healthcare closer to the people, but also created new opportunities for students to pursue their dreams of becoming doctors”.

Harish Rao said despite the Central government’s decision not to allocate any of the 157 new medical colleges to Telangana, “we moved ahead and established 29 colleges with our own resources. This effort has set a national record, and in just nine years, we’ve accomplished what couldn’t be done in decades and Telangana students no longer need to spend large sums of money studying abroad in countries like China, Ukraine, or the Philippines. They can now study here, close to their families, without the challenges of living in foreign countries”, he added.
