Helen Keller birth anniversary: UBIDEF urges strict enforcement of disability rights Act

New Delhi, June 27 (RAHNUMA): On the birth anniversary of disability rights icon Helen Keller, the Union Bank of India Differently Abled Employees Federation (UBIDEF) submitted a memorandum to Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Govindaraj, at his office in New Delhi, seeking effective implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016. A comprehensive memorandum addressing the various challenges faced by the persons with disabilities (PwDs) across the country was submitted by the delegation.

A UBIDEF delegation led by All India General Secretary P. Rajashekar highlighted critical concerns, including inadequate implementation of the 5% reservation for students with disabilities in higher education, non-fulfilment of the 4% job reservation quota in government sectors, discrimination in promotions, and hardships caused by transfers of disabled employees and caregivers.

The federation also demanded enhanced health insurance and conveyance benefits, citing rising medical and rehabilitation costs, and called for improved accessibility in government offices, banks, public transport, and digital services.

UBIDEF urged the Centre to establish a robust monitoring mechanism to ensure strict compliance with the RPwD Act and take action against organizations failing to meet statutory obligations.

Addressing the issue, P. Rajashekar said that equal opportunities for persons with disabilities are a constitutional and legal right, not a matter of charity, and stressed the need for a more inclusive and sensitive approach by employers and public institutions.

Chief Commissioner Govindaraj assured the delegation that the concerns raised would be brought to the notice of the relevant authorities and appropriate action would be pursued in accordance with the RPwD Act, 2016.

The delegation included Working President R Swami Naik, Deputy General Secretary Amit Kumar Pandey, President Anil Appu and Vice President Ganesh Reddy.
