A day after court granted bail to Swami Aseemanand in the Hyderabad Mecca Masjid blast case, the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) on Friday demanded that the Telangana government should appeal against the bail granted.
During Zero Hour in the Legislative Assembly, MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi asked Telangana government to pressurise the NIA (National Investigation Agency) to challenge the bail granted to right-wing activist, Swami Aseemanand.
“The cases were registered and Hindutva members were arrested after the CBI inquiry. However, Swami Aseemanand was granted bail by a court. I appeal to the government to put pressure on NIA and they should be told that whoever has got bail in the (Mecca Masjid bomb blasts case)…their bails get cancelled,” Owaisi was quoted as saying by PTI.
Agreeing to the MIM leaders’ comments, Home minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy reportedly said, “Whatever question raised by the member Akbaruddin Owaisi is a valid question. Definitely, an inquiry will be conducted on how he (Aseemanand) got bail. Efforts will be made to get the bail cancelled. We will ensure justice is done.”
Aseemanand, alias Nabakumar Sarkar, was granted bail on Thursday in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case by the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge of NIA special court at Nampally Court in Hyderabad.
According to a report in The Indian Express, NIA is unlikely to challenge the bail granted to Aseemanand in the case.
It was also reported that NIA opposed the bail in the special court and will be taking a final decision after reading the court verdict.
On May 18, 2007, Mecca masjid in Hyderabad witnessed a bomb blast during Friday prayers killing nine persons and injuring 58.
Aseemanand along with seven others had been charge sheeted in the case by NIA.
According to The Hindu, there were 304 witnesses in the case out of which 166 have been examined.
