The MeT department has issued a heat wave warning for the northern parts of Telangana on Monday, even as several parts of the state experienced temperatures over 40 degree Celsius.
While Hyderabad reportedly experienced 42 degree Celsius, places like Adilabad recorded 44.4 degrees, while Mahbubnagar recorded 44 degrees.
Reports suggest that this was the second highest recording for April since 2010.
Last week, the Meteorological Department said that temperatures across many parts of the state are likely to be above normal by 2 to 3 degree Celsius and are expected to stay above 40 degree Celsius in many places of the state.
The temperature was also expected to rise, because of a cyclonic storm that had been brewing in the southwest Bay of Bengal.
The storm, which feeds off moisture in its surroundings, has now reportedly intensified into a depression.
“As of now, temperature in the city is four degrees above normal. Since we are on the Deccan Plateau -at an altitude higher than the coastal regions -the heat has a direct effect. Also, cyclonic circulation in eastern sea, has reduced moisture in the air,” IMD Director (Forecast) K Naga Ratna told TOI.
However, the system is likely to move away from the Andhra coast, towards Bangladesh or Myanmar.
Last week, the Meteorological Department issued a three-day heat wave warning for Andhra Pradesh.
Dry weather prevailed in Rayalaseema region, while coastal Andhra recorded maximum day temperatures above normal by 2 degree Celsius to 3 degrees Celsius.
“While 460 mandals across the 13 districts have to be cautious about the heat index, 195 others in all the coastal districts will have to be extremely cautious. Hence, we appeal to the public to be careful during these three days,” a press release from the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) had said.
Meanwhile, people in Telangana have been advised to stay indoors if possible, and authorities in the state have prepared an action plan to prevent deaths due to heat wave.Read: As Hyderabad sizzles, shrinking greenery and urbanisation to blame for rising temperatures
